A Warm Welcome at Clayburn Middle Helps Students Start Strong

At Abby Schools, we know student success grows in caring, connected schools. Each morning at Clayburn Middle, that begins with a simple hello from community member Ben Gruber, an 84-year-old great-grandfather who has spent more than a decade welcoming students at the door.

Ben’s consistency, rain or shine, does more than brighten mornings. A friendly greeting helps students feel seen and safe, easing the transition into class so they can focus, participate, and learn. Staff say that kind of connection sets a positive tone for the day and strengthens a culture of kindness across the school.

From high-fives to a signature handshake, Ben models the respectful, inclusive behaviours we value. His quiet service reminds us that every adult connection matters in a student’s journey, and that community partners and volunteers play a real role in learning and well-being.
